Honest Abe
This statue of Abraham Lincoln sits at the top of Bascom Hill on the University of Wisconsin Madison campus.
As a representative in Illinois, Lincoln and two others jumped through a window in order to block voting on a bill they felt was not right. He was unfortunately caught and returned and the vote went through. Dwspite this, we view him as being one of our greatest presidents.
The 14 Wisconsin senators who left the state to block the vote acted as Mr. Lincoln did. There are those that say they didn’t do their job by going to Illinois. But they did do their job. They allowed those of us not in-the-know to learn about the injustices that were about to be hoisted upon us; they were looking out for the people that elected them. They did not sit by and let the majority steamroll over them. They challenged what they deemed unfair and unethical, and did what was necessary to block the vote and expose Walker and his henchmen and henchwomen. They did this not only for the people of Wisconsin, but for people across the country and abroad.
I don’t know that any of the men or women who went to Illinois to block the vote will ever be president. But these 14 senators will certainly go down in history as individuals who stood by the people in a time of need.
